چکیده

25 Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a multi-drug resistant organism increasingly isolated from the 26 lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. One hundred twenty-five S. maltophilia isolates from 85 27 CF patients underwent planktonic and biofilm susceptibility testing against 9 different 28 antibiotics, alone and in double antibiotics combinations. When S. maltophilia were grown as a 29 biofilm, 4 of the 10 most effective antibiotic combinations included high-dose levofloxacin and 7 30 of the 10 combinations included colistin at doses achievable by aerosolization. 31

MacABCsm, an ABC-type tripartite efflux pump of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia involved in drug resistance, oxidative and envelope stress tolerances and biofilm formation.

OBJECTIVES To characterize a five gene cluster, macRS-macABCsm, in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. METHODS The presence of macABCsm operon was verified by RT-PCR. The substrate spectrum of the MacABCsm efflux pump was investigated by mutant construction and susceptibility testing. The physiological role of MacABCsm was assessed by comparing the growth of wild-type and macABCsm mutant under diff...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Clinical Isolates from Blood Samples in Iran

Introduction: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a nosocomial multi drug resistant opportunistic pathogen which causes infections in vulnerable patients with cancer, cystic fibrosis and indwelling catheters. Methods: 45 clinical S. maltophilia isolates were collected from blood samples and identified by biochemical tests. Susceptibility to different antibiotics including co-trimoxazole, levofloxac...

Standard versus biofilm antimicrobial susceptibility testing to guide antibiotic therapy in cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND The antibiotics used to treat pulmonary infections in people with cystic fibrosis are typically chosen based on the results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing performed on bacteria traditionally grown in a planktonic mode (grown in a liquid). However, there is considerable evidence to suggest that Pseudomonas aeruginosa actually grows in a biofilm (or slime layer) in the airways...

Biofilm formation by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia: modulation by quinolones, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and ceftazidime.

We investigated the in vitro effects of seven fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, grepafloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and rufloxacin), compared to those of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) and ceftazidime on total biomass and cell viability of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia biofilm. S. maltophilia attached rapidly to polystyrene, within 2 h of incubation, and then b...

Draft Genome Sequence of the Biofilm-Forming Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Strain 53

A clinical strain of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (designated strain 53) was obtained, and a whole-genome sequence was generated. The subsequent draft whole-genome sequence demonstrated the presence of a number of genes encoding for proteins involved in resistance to a number of antimicrobial therapies.
